This course is a multi-part, hybrid offering that provides the foundational education necessary to prepare state-licensed RNs to enter the practice faith community nurse ministry in their respective congregation or faith community. The course is open to people of all faiths and religions. Foundations of Faith Community Nursing is a collaborative course offering of Sanford Health and Augustana University. It is based on the curriculum developed through the Westberg Institute for Faith Community Nursing, which curriculum is owned by the Spiritual Care Association, 505 Eighth Avenue, Suite 900 New York, NY 10018.

Registered nurses of all faiths are invited to attend the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing training course. Faith Community Nurses draw a closer link between their faith and healthcare communities by acting as health educators and counselors to a faith community membership, as well as assisting with homebound, nursing home, and/or hospitalized congregation members. Through this nondenominational program, participating registered nurses receive continuing education hours, as well as the support and resources necessary to implement a Faith Community Nursing program in their faith community. Established in 1997 by Carle Health, the program has trained over 560 nurses who have found joy in serving their faith communities.

The Concordia College Parish Nurse Ministry Program will be offering the Foundations in Faith Community Nursing educational program using a hybrid format. The schedule is as noted: 3 sessions via ZOOM (March 5, 12, and 19, 2026) from 3:00 pm to 8:30 pm CT, and 3 sessions in person (April 9, 10, and 11, 2026) from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm CT on Th/Fr and 7:30 am to 2:30 pm CT on Sat. This course provides the basic knowledge and skills needed to initiate a faith community nursing ministry. It combines classroom teaching, as well as online self-instructional modules and exercises. Participants will explore the history, philosophy, and ethical practice of faith community nursing, as well as legal issues, accountability, and documentation. In addition, the course will provide tools and resources that faith community nurses and ministries of health can use to initiate disease prevention and health promotion programs. Participants will recognize their role in facilitating prayer, worship, and functioning within a ministerial team.
Target Audience: The major focus of the course is related to the role of the faith community nurse. Anyone interested in developing a health ministry team within their church is welcome to attend. All participants who complete the course requirements will be eligible to graduate and receive a certificate of completion and 50 CNEs.

Registered nurses of all faith backgrounds are invited to participate in the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Training Course. Faith Community Nurses help bridge the connection between faith communities and healthcare by serving as health educators, counselors, and advocates. Their work often includes supporting homebound individuals and visiting members in nursing homes or hospitals.
Through this nondenominational program, participating nurses receive continuing education hours along with the resources and guidance needed to establish or strengthen a Faith Community Nursing program within their own faith community.
Established in 1997 by Carle Health, the program has trained more than 600 nurses, many of whom have found deep fulfillment in serving their congregations through this unique blend of faith and nursing practice.
