I look forward to reading and reviewing submitted book reviews. I encourage FCNs to take advantage of this learning challenge in a safe and informal environment through the FCN platform. I found myself beginning to enjoy book reviews in my Master's and Doctoral programs. I am uploading to this group an informal book review I wrote several years ago on my own for friends. Also uploaded is a formal book review written in a 4MAT form which my Doctoral program course required. You will see two extremes in the informal and formal book reviews, the formal written more on a critical thinking level. I hope these inspire you. The Purdue Writing Lab is a great resource.

The book, 1491: New revelations of the Americas before Columbus is an intriguing account of the Americas before Columbus...Joan Appleton A Book Review
The book, 1491: New revelations of the Americas before Columbus is an intriguing account of the Americas before Columbus arrived. The book 1491 is considered an innovative study that profoundly changes our comprehension of the Americas before Europeans came to the Western hemisphere (Mann, 2005). A second edition in 2011 has been published by Vintage Books. The author, Charles C. Mann, is a correspondent for Science and The Atlantic Monthly, Science, and Wired. In addition to 1491, Mann has authored and coauthored several books such as The Wizard and the Prophet; Before Columbus, The Americas, of 1491; The Second Creation; and 1493, Uncovering the New World Columbus Created. Mann graduated from Amherst College in 1976 with a major in interdisciplinary studies where he continues to appear as a guest speaker. The book 1491 is qualitative research of the historical approach (Burns & Grove, 2009). Burns and Grove (2009) state that as to the importance and meaning of historical research “philosophers found that understanding humankind as a historical phenomenon held out the promise of understanding the essence of humankind” (p. 58). It appears that Mann must have agreed with Burns and Grove (2009), because he certainly put many hours into this research. Mann collected his data from experts in their fields of anthropology, historiography, archaeology, epidemiology, ethnology, botany, and medicine (Mann, 2005). Mann also collected data from old documents, his own and others’ field notes, interviews, and observation (Mann, 2005). The purpose of Mann’s historical research was to explore this phenomenon of the presence of humankind in the Western hemisphere thousands of years ago before the Europeans came to the Americas (Mann, 2005). The research question is not so much that the inhabitants were there, because there had already been minimal research to this effect, but the amount of people there when the Europeans came. Mann’s interpretation of the data he collected agrees with some of the previously reported information. It is estimated that approximately 100 million lived in the Western hemisphere in 1491, knew how to cultivate the land, built well-developed structures, and were the founders of many of our crops today (Mann, 2005). The book 1491 is a fascinating account of research of the ancient Americas that changes what is being taught in history books. It is questionable that the research conducted by Mann might have been exempted from review by the Institutional Review Board (IR because it involved the collection of data that had been previously studied, and the information was available to the public.
