Importance of Active Learning methods. Adult Learning research confirms that learners remember only about 10% of the material presented through lecture and didactic methods. Adult learners benefit when they can integrate the new knowledge and skills as soon as possible by practice and "hands-on" involvement. In the Foundations Course, where there is so much content, it can be a struggle to find time for active learning. One of the ways we're approaching this at the Faith Community Nurse Network of the Greater Twin Cities is to create videos of some of the modules and require learners to view these prior to class time. For example, we have a 1 hour video on Legal Issues. Then we allot one hour of class time to quickly review and then engage learners in case study discussions, practice and other active learning methods. The instructor is able to assess whether the students grasped the content by the learners' discussions. Our students love this change and the ability to view the videos again if they want to review the module in the future.

Ann Gustafson Thanks for sharing this approach! I really like the idea of using pre-class videos to free up time for active learning. Re: the longer 4-hour... Thanks for sharing this approach! Re: the longer 4-hour modules, what creative strategies have you found to keep learners engaged while incorporating adult learning principles? How do you balance the depth of content with interactive methods in those extended sessions?Show more3 weeks ago
